Suicide Attack in Kabul: Afghan Minister Khalil-ur-Rehman Haqqani Killed

Kabul, December 11 (Agencies): Afghanistan’s capital, Kabul, witnessed a deadly explosion where Taliban’s Minister for Refugees, Khalil-ur-Rehman Haqqani, was killed. A spokesperson from the Ministry of Interior confirmed the incident. The exact cause of the explosion and the individuals responsible remain unknown. Taliban security agencies are conducting an in-depth investigation into the matter. So far, no group has claimed responsibility for the attack.

Khalil Haqqani was managing Afghanistan’s refugee crisis and was a senior member of the influential Haqqani Network. He was also the uncle of Sirajuddin Haqqani, the Interior Minister and a prominent Taliban leader. According to local media, the explosion occurred in a mosque on Wednesday, December 11, resulting in Khalil Haqqani’s death.

The exact number of casualties and injured individuals from the blast is still unclear. Khalil-ur-Rehman Haqqani’s nephew, Anas Haqqani, confirmed his uncle’s death in the explosion. Khalil Haqqani was the brother of Jalaluddin Haqqani, the founder of the Haqqani Network.

Since the Taliban took control of Afghanistan in 2021, incidents of violence have decreased as their war against U.S. and NATO-led foreign forces ended. However, the regional affiliate of the Islamic State, known as Islamic State Khorasan (IS-K), remains active in Afghanistan. IS-K has continued to target civilians, foreigners, and Taliban officials through shootings and bombings.
